I am a postgraduate student in Melbourne suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder and bouts of depression. I have been there for several years, over which there have been changes in institutional support (ranging from none with active discrimination, to limited support at the individual departmental level without accompanying systemic support from faculty or university wide policy). These levels are still lagging years behind the Disability Discrimination Act. I also know of a group of Melbourne uni psychiatric sufferers (named Mental Awareness for Students on Campus) who have varied experiences. If any researchers in this area wish to have access to my experiences or be put in touch with other students with similar students, contact me by email at [log in to unmask]
Lorna and Laurence, you are to be congratulated for doing much needed academic work in this area. So much of the time, students with psychiatric disabilities are seen as either administrative nuisances or second class citizens!!!

Creative people who can't help but explore other mental territories are at greater risk, just as someone who climbs a mountain is more at risk
