As someone with cerebral palsy, probably for a greater degree, I do have
an impairment identity and a disability impairment. I relate to myself
both as someone with CP as well as an disabled person, which are
different identities. I am both forget I am disabled and also forget I
have cp, despite having a speech impairment.
I am writing up research on this issue which I will share with people in
the coming weeks.
Many Thanks, Simon

Subject: Re: Obstacles to identity formation
To all
I may not be in the majority I have cerebral palsy, but I am hardly ever
aware of my impairment or its effects. My impairment which mostly
effects
the way I walk is incorporated into the way exist and live in the world.
Only during times of extreme pain, or someone pointing out that I have
an
impairment do I become aware of it.
My identity has been formed through experiences with other people and my
environment - an enivironment I am happy to say has had little negative
effects on me as far as my disability is concerned. From Secondary
school
onwards I have received little discrinmation on account of my cerebral
palsy
or physical difference, call it what you will and there are other layers
of
my personality which I view as far more important than being disabled.
A thought could it be that by talking about the disabled identity, we do
in
part, and I stress THE PART help construct a problem which FOR SOME
might
not have been so important in the first place.\
Of course we should talk about it, but perhaps be careful how much time
we
dedicate to the disabled identity.
Back to my foxhole I go.
