Raj To Rhondda: Time Shift
Time Shift tells the story of the generation of
doctors who came from the Indian Subcontinent to
become the hidden heroes who have formed the backbone
of the NHS for the last 40 years.
Having arrived to answer Enoch Powell's plea for help
in the mid 1960s, they came over in their thousands,
full of hope and ambition. But when they arrived they
found the only jobs open to them were those that no
one else wanted - the 'Cinderella' specialities like
mental health, geriatrics, or as GPs in Britain's in
most deprived areas.
Despite enduring years of discrimination, they
fulfilled Britain's health needs and carved successful
careers that took them to the heart of the British
medical establishment. Now, as they collectively reach
retirement, Britain is once again struggling to fill
these less appealing posts and there's a very serious
crisis looming.
Interviewees include Dr Edwin Borman, of the BMA; Dr
Aneez Esmail, author of the report which highlighted
the crisis in GPs: Professor Mark Johnson of De
Montford University, Leicester; Dr Gautam Bodiwala
from India who was head of Leicester's A&E department
for 25 years until his retirement and Dr Bashir
Qureshi, author of Multicultural Medicine.
