We're about to undertake a major change in how we deliver our service here
at Sheffield Hallam. For the past five years we have acted as a service
provider as part of the marketing department - if a school/dept wanted a
website aimed at the outside world we would build it for them. In terms of
content, look and feel and structure we built more-or-less what we were
asked for (providing it met corporate id and web publishing standards).
We're now moving towards an 'account manager' role - staff within the team
still design and build the sites, but only do work that adds value to the
site - i.e. will generate income, recruit students, etc. This is to remove a
lot of 'vanity publishing' from the site. Similarly we will have staff in a
'web gardener' role to weed out out-of-date pages from the site - chase up
people to amend them, if they don't amend them within a sensible timeframe
then we'll delete them.
This will work for us as our central team maintains the majority of the
external site on behalf of schools/departments - so we can easily take a
corporate overview, but may not work as well for devolved teams/publishing
models.

Subject: Encouraging staff to update
Hi All,
I am in the process of re-evaluating our procedures and processes. One
question that I asked my team, and that always seems to crop up, is what can
we do to encourage our departments to update content more frequently?
Most of our departments here see web updates as a low priority and I'd like
to encourage them to keep on top of the updates and keep the site fresh.
Aside from tightening down procedures to make it easier to do so can anyone
recommend initiatives to encourage staff to get more involved?
