My 2p on Betsie....
Great when it works! - we use it across our site and it works fine from
http://www.thegrid.org.uk/about/ ('text only' link at the top) but not
from http://www.thegrid.org.uk/info/ . If anyone has any pointers on why
this might be then I'm happy to hear them. The betsie-devel list didn't
provide any answers!
For some reason, from some pages, which are apparently formatted the same,
correct Betsie blocks etc., the connection dies. Raising the timeout
threshold (i.e. how long it takes before a 'sigalarm' timeout occurs)
doesn't appear to address the issues.
The use of Betsie blocks, 'jump to content' links and the table trick (
http://diveintoaccessibility.org/day_10_presenting_your_main_content_first.html
) are all things which (imo) make Betsie more useful.
I would concur with the experience of the 'cacheing problem' - this
generally only occurs with the first page in a user's visit to be
'Betsied' - since the URL is always the same (in our case it's
http://www.thegrid.org.uk/cgi/text.pl ) Could / would / should it be
possible to adapt the Betsie code to insert the required "don't you dare
cache me" headers that might get round this?
We're also able to offer it to all of our schools (.herts.sch.uk) which is
useful to those of them who care to address such things.
OK, so that's only about 1p's worth...
