This list now has around 720 members, from FE/HE, suppliers, etc.

Hi,
I'm away for one day and the VLE list is busier than it has been for ages.
I'd like to make a couple of points, as the person who manages the list on
behalf of Ferl.
1. Insitutions mentioning courses etc. relevant to VLEs is not a problem,
and I, for one, welcome such information. Netskills, for example, use the
list frequently to advertise their VLE courses, and I think that is
entirely appropriate.
2. The list should not be used to advertise courses which are not relevant
to VLEs. When this occasionally happens, I usually email the people
responsible to ask them not to do it again. I do this off list, to reduce
the number of emails going to the list - I'm very aware numbers of emails
can be a problem!
3. Suppliers are asked not to use the list to advertise their particular
products, and I'm pleased to say have been very responsible about this.
4. On using the curriculum champions list to advertise courses, that's
possible, but this VLE list has a much wider (and larger) membership than
the curriculum list, and also includes a high number of people from HE.
Someone mentioned that they "prefer to read relevant material" - the
trouble is, with 720+ members, what is relevant to one person won't be
relevant to another.
5. Of course, the list shouldn't only be used to tell people about courses.
It would be great to see much more discussion about how people are actually
using VLEs (if they are...), their successes and failures. more about the
pedagogy.
6. Finally, a few weeks ago, we tightened up list membership. I got a bit
worried about people joining the list, and using it to spam the members
about non-relevant topics. List membership used to be entirely open - now
all requests to join come to me, and I only approve them if they are from
someone with a legitimate interest in VLEs - in practise, this means anyone
from an ac address, or suppliers, or someone from other educational-related
organisations.
