Hi Nicola
I've just completed an evaluative study of this age group of students working through an online module using a blended learning approach. Our VLE is also Web CT. A good proportion of my students enjoyed working online and many liked working independently at their own pace. What they found useful were the guided links to web sites and the ability to quickly surf for relevant info. They also enjoyed the online assessments done in Respondus, Hot Potato, Quia etc. Those who didn't like the experience felt it was too challenging and too much like hard work to search for information themselves...it was 'too much like hard work' and preferred the tutor just giving them the notes! I tried to get them to use the bulletin board to ask for help and to support each other but this didn't take off.....most didn't have the maturity to do this meaningfully. I hope this helps.

Subject: Using VLEs with 16-18 year olds

********************************************
I am currently researching into the use of VLEs with 16-18 year olds. I
am looking to develop an online module using WebCT to help AVCE/GNVQ ICT
students to develop the necessary skills to succeed in learning online.
This would most probably be delivered using a blended learning approach.
I am really interested in what others are doing with this age group. Any
experiences or advice? What works or does not work with this age group?
Regards
Nicola Hanson
