Good point, Ian.
Obviously, an article from an external source can only appear on your
College intranet/VLE if whoever wishes to put it there has obtained any
necessary clearance from the copyright holder. You'd need to look at the
precise wording of the copyright statement. Of course, most do not get so
specific, and make the resource available 'for educational use' or to
(particularly if a payment has been made) the college in question without
getting specific about '1st year of AVCE Science' or whatever.
Materials written by members of the college in the course of their
employment are normally regarded as being copyright of the college...
although this is always a grey area as many teachers are quite possessive
about anything that they have written. However, if they have taken the step
of making it available to members of the college by releasing it to the
Intranet/VLE, then I wouldn't see a problem in making it available to a
wider audience WITHIN the college - unless the author gets particularly
'precious' about it.

If you mean a published article then is there need to get copyright
permission to post multiple copies - or even the first one?
