Dear colleagues,
Please can I draw to your attention an exciting event which is taking place
at the DfT on 25 September 2003. A one-day conference is being held to
assess the outcomes of the Transport Visions Network.
Young(ish!) professionals will be presenting the Network's visions to a
mixed audience of young and not so young transport professionals; and
senior figures will be invited to offer short responses to presentations as
a lead-in to discussion sessions. The event, as well as being the formal
conclusion of the Network, will mark its rebirth as the Transport Planning
Society's Young Members Forum.
Details, as included on the event flyer (see
http://www.tps.org.uk/events/2003/250903.htm), are provided below.
I do hope many of you will consider attending but please note that spaces
are limited so don't delay!
Regards,
Glenn

For the past three years the Transport Visions Network
(www.trg.soton.ac.uk/research/TVNetwork) has been exploring the future of
transport in the 21st century. The Network has comprised a UK and overseas
membership of some 250 young professionals who have exchanged and debated
ideas through email and face-to-face discussion. A series of eight reports
has been published setting out the Network's perspective. Its principal aim
has been to challenge existing mindsets, and with ideas such as banning car
use on Sundays, levying an annual mobility tax, nationalising estate
agents, designing plug-and-play vehicles, freight lanes for fully-laden
lorries and virtual mobility, this aim has clearly been pursued!
For three years the Network has had its doors closed to those aged over 35.
Now that the project has been completed this unique event is being held to
enable the young professionals to share and discuss their ideas with senior
colleagues.
Further details will be available nearer the event but the programme will
consist of presentations from Network members accompanied by the delivery
of short 'response' presentations from senior colleagues leading into wider
discussion.
The conference marks the end of the Transport Visions Network. However, it
also marks the beginning of the Transport Planning Society's Electronic
Young Members Forum. Agreement has been reached for the Network to be
adopted by the TPS as a means to continue providing a forum for young
professionals to exchange views, develop professionally and to actively
contribute their views into the transport planning arena.
The event is free to attend. Places will be limited. Blocks of places are
reserved for TVN and for TPS members and are available on a first-come
first-served basis. The majority of the remaining places will be available
by invitation. If you wish to be considered for a place please email the
following details to [log in to unmask]: Name, job title,
affiliation, address, phone no, TVN/TPS Member (Y/N).
