==============================================================

International Course on Global Developments in Urban Drainage Management

February 5-7, 2003

Introduction

With increasing urbanization and the pressures of population, the

impervious areas in the cities are increasing. The drainage managers are faced with the task of managing excess wastewater from the highly

populated areas due to increased water supply to the cities. However,

drainage infrastructure has not kept pace with the rate of population

growth. In addition, rainfall occurs mainly in the monsoon season and a major challenge is to manage the huge volume of monsoon discharges

during these four months. This has resulted in increased incidences of urban flooding followed by epidemics not only disrupting the daily life during monsoons but also affecting the overall quality of life in most of the cities of the region. The drainage systems in developing countries can be better managed through latest scientific techniques which can be adapted for local conditions. The aim of the course would be to familiarize the participants with the recent global developments and international state-of-the art techniques in urban drainage management by key international and national experts. At the end of the course the participants would be in a position to identify and adapt appropriate strategies for their local conditions and implement measures to improve the drainage systems and reduce the consequent damage.

Sponsorship and Financial Support

The course is scientifically sponsored by the IWA/IAHR Joint Committee on Urban Drainage and its Working Group on Technology Exchange Transfer and Training (TETT) involving worldwide experts of the field. Financial support for the course is gratefully accepted from the UNESCO-IHP under the sixth phase of the International Hydrological Programme, Theme 3 Land Habitat Hydrology, Focal Area 3.5 Urban and Rural Settlements.; the IWA (International Water Association) and the WSSCC (Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council).
