Dear Curator,
I write to seek your assistance in locating any extant example
of a 19th Century medical instrument to administer needle-free
injection of medication, originally termed a device for
"l'aquapuncture".
This injector device for "Aquapuncture"
<http://www.cdc.gov/nip/dev/images/GalanteInstrument1866closeup.jpg>
was developed in Paris by H. Galante et Compagnie and
studied clinically by Dr. L. Sales-Girons
<http://www.cdc.gov/nip/dev/images/Sales-GironsPortrait-HiRes.jpg>
at the thermal baths of Pierrefonds
<http://perso.wanadoo.fr/ot.pierrefonds/html/thermes.htm>,
France. I have had no success locating one for historical
examination at the Musée d'histoire de la médecine, at 12, rue
de l'Ecole de Médecine, Paris.
At the website that I maintain on needle-free injection
technology <http://www.cdc.gov/nip/dev/jetinject.htm#history>),
I have posted the only citations in the medical literature
that I can find to this device:
o Presentation at the Imperial Academy of Medicine,
18 December 1866
<http://www.cdc.gov/nip/dev/images/BeclardGalante.jpg>
by A. Béclard
<http://www.cdc.gov/nip/dev/images/BeclardA-bust-1895-MusHistMed-Annotated.j
pg
o (pages 43-44 of: "Notice sur quelques nouveaux
instruments et appareils de chirurgie fabriqués par H. Galante"
<http://www.cdc.gov/nip/dev/images/GalanteInstrument1866.jpg>.
The full bibliographic citations for the device are listed
under Béclard, Galante, and Servajan in the online bibliography
at the website
<http://www.cdc.gov/nip/dev/jetinject.htm#bibliography>.
I thought perhaps that your museum might have access to an
international network of medical history curators who might be
able to locate such an instrument. I would then be pleased to
add photographs of the device at our website and provide links
to the museum holding it.
Thank you very much.
