NEW MSc in 'Tourism and Culture'
Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change
Sheffield Hallam University, UK
This innovative new course is aimed at those who
aspire to develop an understanding of the important
linkages and synergies that exist between tourism and
culture. Tourism organisations are increasingly
recognising the importance of culture in its fullest
sense while cultural bodies increasingly recognise the
importance of tourism in the sustainability of
cultural sites and communities. A postgraduate
qualification that explores the tourism-culture
relationship and the management and marketing issues
it involves will be valuable when seeking employment.
The course draws on the international work carried out
by the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change and
integrates the latest ideas and research in the
tourism and cultural field into the course. The
course will assist you in deepening your understanding
of the tourism sector and the way it utilises culture,
and will develop your skills in managing this often
fragile relationship from the perspective of the
tourist, the tourism industry and the host cultures.
On graduating from this course, there are a wide range
of career opportunities awaiting you. For instance,
you would be qualified to work in destination
management and marketing organisations, tourism and
cultural development agencies, and cultural festival
or event organisations.
The course offers interesting topics designed to cover
a diverse range of tourism and culture themes.
Tourism, Culture and Society develops your
understanding of cultures in relation to the tourist,
the tourism industry and host communities. Tourism
Texts explores the nature of the relationships between
tourism and various media. Arts and Cultural
Industries examines the role of various cultural
sectors such as the performing arts, music, and film
and how these play a role in tourism development.
Destination Marketing examines how such marketing
operates in practice, and looks at current trends,
issues and ethical challenges in this area. Tourism
Development Studies uses international case studies to
investigate the relationship between tourism and
development, and the impacts that accrue at
destinations globally. Sustainable Tourism examines
the application of sustainable development principles
within tourism management. Critical Thinking and
Investigation Methods concentrates on developing the
skills you require for studying and conducting
research at Masters' level. An Applied Management
Project provides you with an opportunity to carry out
a practical consultancy project within the areas of
tourism and culture, while the Dissertation gives you
the opportunity to undertake your own piece of
research. A good dissertation that explores and
researches a new area can help you immensely to
impress potential employers and achieve your career
ambitions.
