In the last few days, I've been saddened to see the spate of anti-France and
Germany.material on mostly American mailing lists.Basically the French are a
lot of cowards and the Germans are Peace-Nazis.
The message is that the Americans won both World Wars, and saved the
collective European ass.  Ha!

Greetings from The Smoke where we've had an astonishing Anti-war
demonstration.  Estimates for the numbers demonstrating vary between the
Metropolitan Police figure of around 750,000 to the march organisers
estimate of 2 million.  I think the police figures were based on the numbers
marching to Hyde Park but didn't include demonstrators who went to the park
direct and people have been coming and going all day.  It was a great thing
to be a part of this demonstration and incredibly heartening to see that so
many people are opposed to bombing Iraq and that, at last, the appalling
treatment the Palestinians have received for so many years is beginning to
be acknowledged.
I'm very cynical about the possibility that this demonstration will change
anything but at least our government can't be in any doubt that there's
enormous opposition to this war.
