Countdown
(provisional title)
Her doctor prescribes calcium tablets
to strengthen bones - a buttress against
the effects of anno domini, the domino
effect of taps turned off tightly,

as lovehearts, are soft , crumbling
with an after-crunch of chalk.
She thanks something for her own teeth
and sees letters. large figures
on a blackboard, problems set
to ponder quietly while the teacher
leaned back in his chair, and embarked
on Napoleonic seas with Forester.
She can recall the gold braid pressed
into his bookclub covers, the smell
of pale peppermints he used to suck.
As you near the end, the beginning
becomes closer and clearer. When you fold
a letter, Dear Sir and Yrs sincerely
touch. All that remains is the slide
into an envelope and a stamp
for the black expectant slot. Perhaps
a kiss for luck.
