Dear Paul,
Forgive me, but to say that to have a brain would hinder a soldier is an
insult to the soldiers who risk their lives all over the world in various
ways to try and prevent war. Often what they have to do takes a good deal
of skill and intelligence - I know several very brainy and cultured
soldiers, and I'm aware of quite a few ignorant and uncultured people who
regard themselves as poets. I do not think many soldiers join the
professional army because they want to kill or injure people.
It's the politicians who start the wars, not the soldiers.Often they have to
do a hard and dirty job. I hold no brief for Bush,or little Tony crawling
after, but I don't slag off the soldiers. Often they are trying to uphold
peace in impossible circumstances.
Kind regards,
grasshopper

the arts tend to be liberal because intellectual work is the antithesis of
military work, in fact to have a brain would hinder a soldier, 'whenever I
hear the word culture I reach for my gun.'
beyond this protest against Iraq, what wider project do you support? A
Democrat instead of a Republican, or something more?
all best wishes,
Paul Murphy
