A curious poem, Gary.
I assume the * * piece is like an aside, or rather the intrusion of reality
into the unpunctuated free-flow of the driver's responses, which is I
suppose a separate reality.
As I read this the driver is thinking "the nature of the bad driving might
kill us under these conditions but then dont we all '...wait for the same
light/south of the river/ in the rain.'"
An interesting poem, Gary,thanks. Arthur.

Subject: Cars Passing in the Rain
Drivers in this corner of the wee world have gotten much worse
Cars Passing in the Rain
north of the river
my four door and the sedan ahead
are passed on a narrow curve
*My wife said, "I miss my van.
We need to trade in the cars and get another."
I said, "A van, SUV, or station wagon?"
She said, "Do they still call them station wagons?"
I said, "I think they still are.*
if they pass two cars on a narrow curve
north of the river
visibility nil
and are lucky enough
not to meet oncoming traffic
we wait for the same light
south of the river
in the rain
