I caught this topic in yesterday's digest but resisted making any comment,
but now my name is mentioned I'd perhaps best say something.
The quote is from a review by Colin Blundell of a book by Florentin
Smarandache to be found the webpage referred to.
I assume the phrase appears in the book under review. I imagine there are
many such phrases in the book as Smarandache is well-known as a
"paradoxist" -- that the phrase has caused much comment probably shows that
it is not so much a truism as an almost throwaway remark designed to evoke
thinking.
This particular review is at least six years old since Colin Blundell [a
well-known internet luddite] stopped writing reviews for me after NHI Review
ceased being published in print -- so this pre-dates 1998. There are on
this page and others, reviews of other books by Smarandache and there is a
link to his webpage and even an email link to the author himself -- so if
you really want to know what he means by this phrase you could ask the man
himself.
I'm sure he would be intrigued by the discussion here but the rules of
mailing lists do not allow list mails to be forwarded to non-members so I
haven't done so.
yours
Gerald
