Subject: Gary home and nearly caught up - The Vallarta Beach Vendor

The Vallarta Beach Vendor

held up blankets -
red, purple, gold with silver threads
the color of butterflies
and Sierra Madre parrots

The shade of a blanket
on my grandmother's floor
battlefield for rubber soldiers
and Indians with bent arrows

"happy hour prices,
almost free
hurricane sale"

She tugged at her bikini bottom
embarrassed to argue
the 10 peso difference
between her price and his
for blankets the color of butterflies
and Vallarta turtles

The shade of a blanket
covering the worn leather
of a 49 Chevy coupe
rust blue
with graduation tassels
dancing from the mirror

"insultente! you take the milk
from the mouth of my bebe's"

*

The man with a frog tattoo
on his knee
toyed with the knot on her bikini top.

If the tattoo was a bear,
ox,
mariposa,
would he?

*

"hurricane prices
though there's never
a hurricane in Vallarta."

The tattoo on his hand
winks into the wind
as frigate birds wait
for baby turtles to put to sea

Butterflies the color of mango
marguerites and grilled shrimp
ride the air down river valleys

The shade of a blanket
hung in the doorway of a hut
besides a stream flowing
into Bahia de Banderas
