Hi Christina,
This is very good. At first glance it just seems like a funny witty piece but itīs really quite subtle. After reading it through a few times Mr Spudīs dislike of Onion begins to feel quite insidious. And itīs not over-stated. It works very well, I wouldnīt change anything.
Best wishes, Mike

Mr Spud Speaks His Mind
Don't get me wrong: there's nothing wrong with onions.
I was raised with all sorts - shared the bed with swedes,
turnips, parsnips... oh, and carrots too. Nice bunch.
I suppose I should feel sorry for the onions:
no telling where they'll end up. Being that versatile doesn't
pay.
I know: you're right. But I can handle sprouts. Sure,
they're lucky: in for a quick steam, then straight on the plate
but
they didn't ask to be grown, any more than we did.
Onions do go on though. My cousin, King Edward says it's the
skin -
all those layers - either they don't listen or they can't hear.
Still, I always say, when push comes to shove,
we're all veg and we'll end up sliced or chopped
or thrown in whole and then - straight down a gullet.
After that doesn't bear thinking about. But
you have to admit it: onions smell.
