I love "block of time", and harks back to the ice in the "icy wind" (ice
block?). I'd do without "emerging from" and settle for, say, "... after
my/the heated building" as being the more conversational and compact. Is
"know" intentional.
You make me hanker after a winter waterside. I'm off now to the source of
The River Ribble, which emerges from old coal measures, and has recently
been cleaned of its polluting iron. We are looking for the first kingfisher
(often to be seen on the neighbouring, smaller, River Spodden which becomes
famous as it runs through Healey Dell nature reserve with its elegant
highest railway viaduct in Britain at 110 metres, now on a footpath, the
railway having been axed, but it needs a head for heights!
