Hello Gary,
I fully understand your puzzlement. The whole thing hinges on making a connection with an advert that was frequently shown on UK television in the 60s. It was for a product called, I believe, the living girdle and female viewers were invited to carry out for themselves the fingertip test which involved placing their fingertips upon their stomachs and pressing lightly. This would make them appear to be 5 lbs lighter than they really were. The masterstroke of marketing was revealed when the advert voice announced that the living girdle would perform this same function for them. The manufacturer of this vital commodity was a company called Platex. Of course the requirement for such specialised background knowledge is a fault in the poem, but I mainly wrote as a bit of fun. Hope this helps to clear up some of the fog.
Best wishes, Mike

Mike, I don't understand the S below - 5 lb and plating.
Yes, I remember the 60s
when 5 lb was every mother´s bane
and plating offered some defence
in the battle with the body.
