Plan For A Winter Palace
To enclose the tall air and create space.
To lay floors that sweep in measured lines
through door after door toward the horizon.
To conceal surfaces beneath soft fabrics,
smooth woods, cold marble.
To wrap up pain in cloth of gold,
displayed on silver filigree dishes.
To balance rooms and stairways,
walls and roof in unlikely harmony.
To people this palace with eternal beings -
gods and full-bodied women.
To illuminate all this from a sky
as white as snow;
the ground that shines with light,
at night glows blue.
