Dear Ann,
You're making a very interesting point, which it seems to me is one of
the chief debates about poetry. I realise that many people believe that the
emotion or thought is the main thing where poetry is concerned, but if that
were true, the people who had had the most extreme experiences, or were the
most brilliant intellectually, would write the best poems. That just doesn't
happen. I think good poems are written by those who have the ability to
write well, have mastered the techniques of communication. So I think it is
more about writing and fashioning an experience with words than about the
thoughts and feelings that were the original inspiration of a poem.
Kind regards,
grasshopper

Dear Grasshopper'
I agree, it is sooooo satisfying to see the words come together in
shapes and structures. I am not good at it but I really appreciate the
experience, though it should not put people off writing poetry. The thought
or feeling has to come first, we learn as we become more involved I think,
