Dear Gary,
The poem you quoted tends to prove my point, I think.
It begins and ends with the poet--it frankly doesn't concern me.
What would we think of a doctor who told us how poor a doctor he was, and
what a mess he made of his last cases.
This sort of poem is ultimately about self-aggrandishment to me. It assumes
whatever Moi,The Poet writes is automatically fascinating to everybody else.
Nah, I'm not convinced, sorry. LOL!
Kind regards,
grasshopper

Subject: Re: [THE-WORKS] Discussion topic? Poems about writing poems.
I think Art should mainly be
about life, not about art. Poems about poems can get very incestuous and
inbred-- frankly I think it's rather an unhealthy trend.

There is a school which says poems should not be about the ordinary and
everyday - indoor plumbing, white bread and dirty floors
Another wishes no religious or political or even -love- poems
But why should any subject be off limits? Isn't it the way we say it rather
than what we say?
Besides I think more folk read poetry than we might admit and that it has
generally been a marginal art for many, many years. (Look at the sales to
Poetry Speaks.)
Copper Canyon Press is publishing an antho of poetry about poetry this
month. The following is from a work from the book reprinted in their
catalogue
Perfectly Tired
of being caught perfectly
in fiction that is perfection.
I try to write imperfect poetry with perfect imperfection;
but I can only write imperfect poetry
imperfectly.
