I think Art should mainly be
about life, not about art. Poems about poems can get very incestuous and
inbred-- frankly I think it's rather an unhealthy trend.

There is a school which says poems should not be about the ordinary and
everyday - indoor plumbing, white bread and dirty floors
Another wishes no religious or political or even -love- poems
But why should any subject be off limits? Isn't it the way we say it rather
than what we say?
Besides I think more folk read poetry than we might admit and that it has
generally been a marginal art for many, many years. (Look at the sales to
Poetry Speaks.)
Copper Canyon Press is publishing an antho of poetry about poetry this
month. The following is from a work from the book reprinted in their
catalogue

but I can only write imperfect poetry
imperfectly.
