But you know the only thing to be really learned from history is

Arthur, I think we also learn that we cannot predict where we will go by
where we have been. In general, on this side of the pond, we have assumed
colonism is dead, that the old 18th century idea that we white/Christian
nations needed to act oversee the less enlightened peoples is passé. It
appears we were wrong, that our task is to enlighten the "less capable." I
hope we do not learn the same lessons that Britain learned in Palestine and
the French in N. Africa and SE Asia.
In addition, watch Turkey and the Kurds. There may be more trouble for the
world there than in Iraq proper.
