the keep,
a curved stone tooth,
juts below a scumbled sweep
of oyster-grey and pearly blue.
Thunder shakes the eastern view
and wakes old lions from sleep.
In war, all truth
lies deep.

Where I sit,
another chair pad wore
until its cotton patting
pokes white through the sides
like rain clouds on a gray day
to remind me my best work is
not always done sitting
on my ass.
