This is not my opinion but will I hope clear things for folk.
'ing 'words where they are gerunds e.g. I enjoy having a drink, is OK. As an
adjective e.g. the working classes is OK,
What is sometimes objected to are 'ing' words as past and present
participles, eg I am walking, I was walking, where the objection is made
because it is felt that the verb loses its muscularity and power when it is
in the passive voice.
That I believe is the meat of the objection. I do not object although I do
bear the objection in mind when writing and make choices based on this
analysis.
I hope I have that right and I am sure someone will tell me if I am
wrong.Arthur
