Dear John and the SPM list,
During normalization in VBM, I've tried to normalize T1 scans originally
realigned and resliced using the AIR package. The quality of normalization
using nonlinear deformations was not too great. A large number of images
were distorted. Consequently, I decided to attempt normalization using just
the linear affine transform with 8mm smoothing of the template. This gave me
superior quality normalization. My question is: Is it ok to use just the
affine transform during normalization or is there a logical reason why
nonlinear deformations should (or should not) be used? Also, is this
different for the case of VBM than any other, e.g. fMRI?
Thanks,
Mike
