If you are working with older subjects, then you may be able to
register them together better if you create your own template
image. The subjects in the templates distributed with SPM are
relatively young, so are not really representative of the kinds
of brains that you will be spatially normalising. Your own
template will also have a more representative intensities for
different tissue types, allowing spatial normalisation to be
more accurate (because it is based on minimising the mean squared
difference between the images).
