Hello,
There are still a few places left on the following two Netskills workshops in Strathclyde:

17th June - Enhancing Your Web Pages

18th June- Web Accessibility: Design-for-all

An outline of each workshop is included below. For further details and to book a place, please go to http://www.netskills.ac.uk/workshops/forthcoming.html

Don't forget that both these workshops can also count towards the Netskills BTEc Professional Development Certificate in Web Development. Information on this accreditation scheme can be found at http://www.netskills.ac.uk/accreditation/

Enhancing Your Web Pages
Further HTML, CSS, Design and Accessibility
09:30 - 16:30 Tuesday 17th June 2003

At Strathclyde University

Having mastered the basics of HTML fairly quickly, many web developers will then look for ways in which they can enhance their pages. For example, HTML form tags can be used to create web page interfaces to allow (often complex) user interaction. Cascading Style Sheets can also help developers exercise precise control over the display of page content, whilst providing the opportunity to present the same content in several ways (without maintaining duplicate web pages!). Both methods are explored in this workshop. Accessibilty is rapidly becoming the driving force behind the design considerations for many web sites. This workshop will also investigate some of the fundamental steps required to produce accessible content as well as introducing current guidelines and web standards. This workshop provides a platform from which to make the next step towards more attractive, functional and accessible web content as well as providing a brief overview of some more advanced technologies for web interaction and content management/delivery.

This is a practical workshop for users of the World Wide Web who have had some experience of creating basic web pages and want to develop their pages further. Whilst it may be attended as a stand-alone workshop, it also follows on from the Netskills workshop "Web Pages from Scratch".

Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion. Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.

Workshop Requirements
Participants should have previously used the World Wide Web through a browser such as Netscape or Internet Explorer and MUST have authored simple web pages using HTML. Knowledge of basic HTML tags such as for including images and hypertext links is essential. Experience of using Microsoft Windows for opening and saving files and opening and closing applications such as a Web browser would be helpful.

Web Accessibility: Design-for-all
09:30 - 16:30 Wednesday 18th June 2003

At Strathclyde University

An increasing awareness of accessibility issues suggests that designing web pages that are usable and accessible by all users is ever more important. This is true both in terms of good practice as a design principle, and also to satisfy the UK legal requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and more recently the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Act (SENDA). A tendency to focus on the graphical web browser, and also visual impairment, overlooks the variety of differing physical and cognitive abilities, and equipment and techniques that are available to support these. The "Design for All" principle, which underpins this workshop, encourages designers to develop a single accessible web site that does not impose barriers to usage.

This workshop is aimed at anyone who produces web pages and wishes to understand and explore the principles and practice of producing accessible content.

Workshop Requirements
Participants should have previously used the World Wide Web through a browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, and MUST have authored web pages using HTML. Knowledge of HTML tags such as those for creating headings, tables and hypertext links is essential. Some knowledge of cascading style sheets would be helpful although not essential. Experience of using Microsoft Windows for opening and saving files and opening and closing applications such as a web browser would also be helpful.

The cost of each workshop is 120 pounds for participants from UK higher and further education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the relevant fees. Note: Costs include lunch, morning coffee and afternoon tea.

Joining details and further information will be sent to participants prior to the workshop
