Dear David and SCI-3L,
I can't comment on working for the OU, but it's nice to hear from you
and interesting that Bristol is thinking again about how CE should be
organised. At Southampton we are in the middle of a reorganisation of
the whole university which entails a rather messy mainstreaming of CE.
I have spent most of my career in a dedicated CE department, but
times have changed and I'm inclined to think that CE (and especially
professional and vocational CE) now needs to be seen as a duty of
each subject department. The real problem lies with "liberal" CE, i.e.
non-vocational public education, which (whether mainstreamed or not)
is now very hard to maintain at fee levels that the public can afford.
