JOB DESCRIPTION


JOB TITLE:              Social Policy Research Officer

Employed By:            The Board of Management of Jesuit Centre for
Faith & Justice
Responsible To:         Director, Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice
(CFJ)
Place of Work:          26 Upper Sherrard St, Dublin 1
Area of activity:               Dublin City and District


Job Summary

        To engage in and communicate social policy analysis that is
both accessible and thorough, and that brings the twin perspectives of
Christian faith and the experience of those who are affected to bear on
issues related to injustice and marginalisation both in Irish society
and in the relationship between Ireland and people elsewhere

Statement of Centre Objectives and Aims

&#61623; To carry out social analysis, informed from a faith perspective, on
issues that directly impact the lives of individuals and communities
experiencing poverty and exclusion
o To increase awareness and understanding of social issues
o To critically analyse state social policies and programmes, in
particular their distributional impact
o To campaign for social change
&#61623; To engage individuals and groups in critical reflection on social
justice issues in the light of the Gospel and Christian Social Teaching
&#61623; To provide a resource to other parts of the Social Sector and other
Jesuit ministries and institutions in terms of educational material,
information, input and presentations

Key Tasks And Responsibilities

1.      Editor of Working Notes
1.1     To agree a plan for each issue of Working Notes with the
Director.
1.2     To identify and invite external authors as required.
1.3 To research and write articles
1.4     To organise the editorial function.
1.5     To coordinate with administrative staff regarding distribution
and printing

 2.     Seminar
2.1     To organize and convene an annual standing seminar that will
meet once a month over a period of eight or nine months on a key issue
that is a focus for the Centre s work.
2.2     To facilitate and help produce the output from the seminar in
the form of a book, booklet, series of lectures, single talk, lobbying
or media intervention

3.      Advocacy and Promotion
3.1     To help develop effective media interventions by the Centre in
cooperation with the Jesuit Communications Centre
3.2 To develop links with journalists, broadcasters and other media
groups
3.3 To promote Working Notes and other publications of the Centre
3.4 To explore ways to dialogue with the Government, state
institutions, other NGO s or relevant organisations on social policy
issues

4.      Strategic Development and Operational Planning
4.1     To produce a Social Policy Research operational plan each year.
4.2 To contribute to the planning and development of the overall
strategic plan

5.      Networking
5.1     To be available to give talks to various groups or facilitate
groups working on issues of faith and justice.
5.2     To coordinate with JRS (Ireland) the work done in the Centre on
issues relating to refugees asylum seekers and immigrants without
official documentation or with Irish born children.
5.3     To network with other groups both religious and secular as well
as with other Jesuits and their co-workers who are engaged in work on
the issues the Centre is addressing.

6.       Management And Supervision
6.1     To liase closely with the staff team to ensure co-ordination of
activities and information.
6.2     To attend staff supervision and support meetings and
participate in team meetings.
6.3     To provide verbal and written reports as required.
6.4     To attend staff training as required.

7.      Other
7.1     To carry out other duties connected with the Centre as
instructed by the Director of the Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice.









Terms and Conditions

8.1     Hours: 35 per week, occasionally including some unsociable
hours involving evenings and weekends.  A system of time in lieu will
apply.
8.2     Contract: This post will be for 3 years.
8.3     Holidays: 20-25 working days per complete leave year of service
plus statutory
holidays. The annual leave year is 1 January - 31 December.
