The Institute of Technology, Sligo today advertised nationally a position
at assistant lecturer level in the area of Social Research.

This post may be offered on a permanent wholetime, temporary wholetime or
contract basis to a suitably qualified applicant.

This post relates to the teaching and support of social research skills in
the context of the Institute's programme in Applied Social Studies and
other undergraduate and postgraduate courses within the School of Business
and Humanities. The successful candidate will be expected to teach
qualitative and quantitative research methods, including all aspects of the
planning , carrying out, presentation and dissemination of research, in
particular to students on the National Diploma and the Bachelor of Arts in
Applied Social Studies. The post will also involve teaching and support in
connection with the expanding programme of taught and research postgraduate
studies within the School, which extend to PhD level. The post is deemed to
be an important one in the development of the research culture within the
School and within the Institute.

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will have an Honours degree
in applied social studies, sociology, social studies or a cognate social
sciences discipline, and a postgraduate qualification that reflects a
significant research component. The successful candidate will be expected
to demonstrate evidence of completed research either within an academic,
institutional or consultancy environment. The candidate will be expected to
demonstrate skills in relation to either qualitative or quantitative
research and a willingness to develop research methods skills in new areas.

Qualifications

Essential

*       a degree at first or second class honours in Applied Social Studies,
Sociology, Social Studies or a cognate social sciences discipline
*       at least three years relevant post-qualification experience, dated from
time of conferring of relevant award
*       demonstrable skills in qualitative and/or quantitative social research
methods

Desirable

*       a relevant higher degree in Research Methods, Applied Social Studies,
Sociology, Social Studies or a cognate social sciences discipline
*       demonstrable tertiary level teaching experience
*       demonstrable experience in the conduct of research, evaluation or
consultancy, in particular in the human services and/or social  sciences
fields
*       a record of active research and publications

Teaching duties

The successful applicant will be expected to teach on some or all of the
following programmes:

*       Applied Social Studies
*       Research component of courses within the School of Business and Humanities
*       such other relevant modules, courses and programmes as are developed
within the Institute

The successful applicant will be expected to play an active role in the
academic development and direction of courses, including teaching,
research, course development, administration and academic assessment.

The appointee should carry out such duties as are assigned by management
including but not limited to:

*       teaching assigned classes, practical workshops, seminars and tutorials up
to 630 hours per annum
*       assessment, monitoring and evaluation of students
*       mentoring and advising of students
*       course development
*       participation in committees appropriate to courses and meetings convened
by management
*       maintenance and provision of appropriate academic records
*       promotional activity and student recruitment
*       liaison with industrial and educational and other relevant bodies
*       participation in the development, implementation and maintenance of
academic quality assurance
*       participation in appropriate activities necessary to the development of
the Department, School and Institute

scholarship within the relevant field(s).
