MARCH 4, 7.30 pm: WRITTEN UNDER DICTATION: RESPONSES TO TOTALITARIANISM
from Nikolay Erdman, Andrey Platonov, Varlam Shalamov and Boris Sveshnikov.
On the eve of the 50th anniversary of Stalinšs death, Robert Chandler and
Peter Tegel will examine how four great artists responded to the Statešs
demands.
ŗAnd the Tsaršs head, judging by the temples, was covered by thick veins
inside which moved only a fine trickle of blood, since these veins had been
filled by a deathly accumulation of sclerotic lime and they constricted the
bloody stream of life; evidently the Tsar was constantly struggling to think
with the power of a god, and he had so exhausted his vital veins of life
that death, rather than wisdom, had appeared in his head.˛
