As well as the rest of the common sense in Alun's message - how about a
rewrite for The Science Reporter? - I have to endorse this statement.
Science is not special. Delete the word "science" and insert "transport" or
"economics". Same issues.
Alun could also have added that while he is a full-time - well, as full time
as Parliament gets - science advisor, committees can also parachute in
advisors with even deeper knowledge of a subject.
Knowledge and subject aren't the issues. MPs can screw up any inquiry with
their incompetent questioning of witnesses.
For really unelected pontificating, visit the other chamber. But there you
will find people who are much more informed by virtue of their background,
and who often deliver better reports on aspects of science.
