Do the fellowships really count as "prizes" for science writing?
We already list those on the ABSW web site. Which is what I am on about. (I
should have said.) We have to really. I was the nutcase who dreamed up the
idea in the first place. How many years have they been running now?
Does the BA still gather reports from media fellows? (We ran one in The
Science Reporter last year.)
Talking to the media minders, these fellowships tend to be well liked. But
every year or two there is one scientist who turns up at his (usually) media
placement and spends all the time there telling them how they are doing it
all wrong. Those who set out to learn tend to gain more from the experience.
After all, what is there in a scientist's training that equips them for
working in the media?

I have some booklets on the 2003 Telegraph Young Science Writers that I can
send out to those interested or there's information at
www.science-writer.co.uk
The BA Media Fellowships will also be running again this year.
The fellowships provide placements working with a national press, broadcast
or internet journalist.
During placements of between 3 and 8 weeks fellows learn to work within the
conditions and constraints of the media to produce accurate and well
informed pieces about developments in science.
After their placements fellows are better equipped to communicate their
research and expertise to the public and their colleagues.
Further information at www.the-ba.net
Online application for the 2003 scheme will open at the end of the month so
I will e-mail the list when this facility is online.

Does anyone know of any prizes for that scientists with a hankering to
write?
The Telegraph seems to be in business still, but I can't see if the MRC,
THES or Wellcome Trust still run their competitions.
