SCIENCE AND GOVERNMENT
With IAN GIBSON MP
Chair of the House of Commons Committee on Science and Technology
INSPIRE Science Café looks at what the government is doing with science
Tuesday 18 February - 8.30
Entry Free
TAKE 5 CAFÉ, ST ANDREW'S STREET, NORWICH
In the convivial atmosphere of Take 5 café, our invited expert will put his
case for 20 minutes, then there'll be a pause for everyone to purchase
drinks and refresh themselves, after which the floor is thrown open for
questions and discussion to try and get to the root of the burning issues in
modern science.
The government has a massive influence on science in the UK, funding the
universities and research councils, science communication activities and
ethical studies and in turn relies upon science for information to inform
its policies - whether we go to war with Iraq will hinge upon what the
scientific investigations of UN Weapons Inspectors discover. Government
policy is also increasingly concerned with science related activities in the
UK - will the commercial growth of GM food be allowed? Will British
scientists be permitted to clone people? Did government commission the right
scientific advice on Foot and Mouth and BSE and did they react correctly to
it?
Norwich MP Ian Gibson is at the heart of the relationship between science
and government, with his committee having an important role to play in
government science policy - this is everyone's chance to come along and ask
questions about what the government really thinks about science in Britain
today and where it is going in the future
The next Science Café will be - 25 March: Understanding How Cancer Spreads:
