The Royal Society, the UK’s premier scientific body, has two vacancies in
its Science Advice Section due to an expansion in its work. They provide an
excellent opportunity for two talented and motivated individuals to work
with some of the UK’s best scientists and to gain experience in national
and international science policy.
Biosciences Manager (£25k - £30k pa) Ref: V15.03
Permanent
The successful candidate will be working on projects in the Biosciences
area (which includes biotechnology and health) ranging from responding to
consultations to producing policy reports and organising briefing meetings.
The post holder will have the opportunity to take the lead in the
development and execution of new projects. Working with the other two
members of the Biosciences team, the post-holder will be expected to
maintain an interest in and prepare responses, where appropriate, on issues
such as GM crops, stem cells and genetics and health. Applications are
invited from enthusiastic individuals with a PhD or equivalent in a
science, engineering or technology discipline and preferably have relevant
experience of policy work. Applicants will be expected to have knowledge of
the contemporary issues within the Biosciences portfolio and will also be
expected to have good IT skills and outstanding interpersonal and
communication skills.
Science Policy Officer (circa £19k pa) Ref: V16.03
Permanent
The successful candidate will initially concentrate on supporting the
Managers responsible for projects related to policy issues in international
security and the Science Base. Recent projects covered include the health
hazards of depleted uranium and strengthening the Biological Weapons
Convention and responding to the Government White Paper on Higher
Education. In addition, the successful applicant will be involved with the
standing committee on the Scientific Aspects of International Security.
Applications are invited from enthusiastic individuals with a degree or
equivalent in any discipline of science, engineering or technology
discipline and preferably with experience of working in an office
environment. Applicants will be expected to have experience of managing
multiple tasks simultaneously and be able to interact effectively with
people at all levels. The ability to transmit complex ideas effectively, in
writing and orally, is also desirable.
