Maddening Sadness
Professor Julian Leff
Depression is the most common psychiatric illness worldwide. It is
estimated that 1 in 5 of us will suffer from depression at some point and
that, by 2020, depression will have overtaken heart disease as the single
biggest illness in the world. There has been a great deal of hype about
antidepressants, like Prozac. But how can we disentangle biological causes
from complex social and cultural factors? Are there non-drug treatments
that can improve resistance to depression? Can social treatments compete
with Prozac? And why, when materially life is better than ever before, are
we all feeling so blue anyway?
Tonight’s speaker is Julian Leff, professor of Social and Cultural
Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry. In 1999 he became the first
winner of the Burgholzi prize for outstanding contributions to psychiatry.
He has published over 200 articles, written numerous books and contributes
regularly to television and radio broadcasts. Leff is also the author of The
Unbalanced Mind. In the chair is Daniel Glaser, neuroscientist at UCL and
the first scientist in residence at the Institute of Contemporary Arts.
Come along, air your views, ask questions or just listen. Join us at 7pm in
the Nash Room, Institute of Contemporary Arts, The Mall, London (£5,4,3
admission). No scientific background required.
