Memory and Forgetting is a season of sci-art and science engagement
activities organised by PEALS, in association with Northern Print Studio and
the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle. The project has received funding from the
Sci Art Consortium and the Arts Council of England.
Sat March 15th 3pm, Music By Heart, concert with the Cobweb Orchestra,
Hatton Gallery.
Talk by brain researcher Lauren Stewart (Institute of Cognitive
Neuroscience) on “Music, memory and the brain”, followed by performance of
music played from memory.

Professor Martin Conway (University of Durham) on “Diseases of memory”
Martin will describe syndromes that can arise following brain damage and in
dementia and consider what these imply for our thinking about memory and the
self.
Followed by W.N. Herbert reading his new poem, 'The Working Self', the
result of a meeting between Bill and Martin made possible by the
Contemporary Poetry & Contemporary Science Project.
There will also be a display of a new work in glass by Naomi James.
Entitled ‘Re-transcription’, it is a representation of the hippocampus, a
brain region essential to memory.

Friday March 21st, 6-8pm, Preview, Memory and Forgetting exhibition, Hatton
Gallery, Newcastle
The exhibition features the results of collaborations between Dr Anya
Hurlbert and painter Daniel Sturgis; Dr Madeleine Eacott and Louise
K.Wilson; Professor Martin Conway and Shona Illingworth; and Dr Julian
Hughes and Ashley McCormick The exhibition opens to the public on Saturday
March 22nd and will run to May 25th.
Monday May 12th, 1-2pm Sci-art talk, Hatton Gallery (TBC)
Dr Julian Hughes (old age psychiatrist) and Ashley McCormick (visual artist)
will talk about dementia, old age, memory, and their collaboration with the
Memory and Forgetting project. All welcome, free.
Monday May 19th , 1-2pm Sci-Art talk, Hatton Gallery (TBC)
Dr Anya Hurlbert (visual neurophysiologist) and Daniel Sturgis (painter)
will talk about colour memory and colour perception, and their collaboration
in the Memory and Forgetting project. All welcome, free.
As well as these events, watch out for a mini-season of memory-related films
at the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle, during May 2003, including Memento (Weds
May 7th), After Life (Monday May 12th) and video work by Shona Illingworth.
