Description
The Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC) has
an annual turnover in excess of £140m and a staff of 1800. It manages three
laboratory sites - the two principal sites being the Rutherford Appleton
Laboratory in Oxfordshire and the Daresbury Laboratory in Cheshire; with the
Chilbolton Observatory located in Hampshire. The CCLRC operates large
research facilities, provides strategic advice to government on their
development and manages international research projects in support of a
broad cross-section of the UK research community.
At this exciting and challenging stage in our development we are looking for
an accomplished professional with extensive experience, to help us promote
the work of the CCLRC to government, business, the research community, the
media and the general public.
Based at the CCLRC headquarters in Oxfordshire your main remit will be to
develop and deliver a portfolio of communication activities to promote the
visibility and influence of the CCLRC.

Head of Marketing and Communication, CCLRC - Rutherford Appleton Laboratory
Up to £39.8K (Band 3) plus benefits
Background
The Council for the Central Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC) is a
non-departmental public sector body with a turnover in excess of £140m and a
staff of 1800. It manages three laboratory sites - the two principal sites
being the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire and the Daresbury
Laboratory; with the Chilbolton Observatory located in Hampshire. The CCLRC
laboratories operate large research facilities for use by the UK research
community, alongside management of international research projects across a
broad range of science and engineering. In addition, the CCLRC provides
strategic advice to government on the development of neutron, muon,
synchrotron and high power laser facilities among others. The main functions
of this post will be located at the CCLRC headquarters at the Rutherford
Appleton Laboratory and it is expected that the majority of the postholders
time would be spent working at this site.
The Position
This exciting and challenging role will provide you with the opportunity to
promote the visibility and influence of the CCLRC, locally, regionally,
nationally and internationally, through the co-ordination and delivery of
our external communications programme. This will involve you fostering and
utilising relationships within the Research Councils, the Office of Science
and Technology (OST) and other key stakeholders. You will report to the
Director of Corporate Development.
Key Responsibilities
You will have responsibility for the CCLRC corporate marketing and
communication activities, delivering a programme that includes exhibitions,
publications, www site content, press and publicity and 'science and
society' initiatives - working with a team of 12, located on two sites. You
will have responsibility for promoting the work of CCLRC to business,
government, the research community, the media and the general public and so
will represent the CCLRC at a high level in government, business and public
life. You will be expected to initiate, co-ordinate and lead PR and
marketing campaigns and will also give advice on communications to the
Council's senior management and researchers.
Knowledge Skills and Experience
Your success in this dynamic and high profile environment will be achieved
by virtue of your significant experience in public affairs, marketing and
all aspects of media liaison and your qualification to degree level. Your
experience will enable you to deliver a range of communication activities. A
sound understanding of the Research Councils system would also be an
advantage.
With your creativity, enthusiasm, initiative and drive you will deliver
excellent 'all round' communication skills, including oral and written
presentational delivery (speech, copy writing and editing).
Good knowledge of the media, proven team working and motivational skills,
displaying tact and discretion are essential. You will be flexible, with
sound judgement and the ability to work well under pressure.
