Are Northerners more likely to offer their seat to someone on a bus? Are the
Scots more likely to help you carry your heavy shopping?
The BA, in association with the Northwest Development Agency (NWDA), has
launched the BA Friendliness Survey - www.howfriendly.com - as part of the
Festival of Science. Developed by psychometrics specialist Dr Mike Smith
from UMIST and Salford Computing, could this survey prove once and for all
that the Northwest is the friendliest place in Britain?
The survey was launched on Coronation Street by TV presenter Fred Talbot. On
hand were the Street's friendly hairdresser, Maria (Samia Ghadie) and its
rather unfriendly newsagent, Norris (Malcolm Hebden).
Speaking at the launch, Annette Smith from the BA said: "Our search for the
friendliest region is just the beginning of a programme of exciting events
that aim to encourage and inspire people to engage with science and the
issues surrounding it. The BA is very excited to be returning to the
Northwest of England - the BA Festival of Science is a huge event which
travels to a different city each year, and we have been given a friendly
welcome already at the University of Salford."
