Secrets and Lies: the troubled relationship between science and the arts
Cross-field collaborations between the arts and sciences are high on the national arts agenda at present, but what are the conflicts and opportunities facing this kind of working? Is there a common ground or are the outcomes and processes of each fundamentally dissimilar? Perhaps artists and scientists share a set of objectives that are closer than they appear on the surface.
Jess Curry and Dan Pinchbeck will discuss these issues and talk about the thoughts and processes involved in making their installation, 'The Secret of Life', which is currently exhibiting at the TwoTen Gallery at the Wellcome Trust as part of the 'Four Plus: Writing DNA' exhibition. Their work takes inspiration from Rosalind Franklin whose X-ray diffraction photographs suggestive of the double helix were integral to the discovery of the structure of DNA. The work is particularly influenced by Franklin's story, and how the lack of recognition originally afforded to her has resulted in her being re-cast as an iconic figure.
Join the debate and share your views on whether art, in providing a different platform with which to view science, has a duty as science does to ensure that what is communicated is factual and 'correct'.
This event is free but spaces are limited. To book please call Denise Armstrong on 020 7611 8657 or email [log in to unmask] by Monday 21st July. Refreshments will be provided.
