From mass to universal higher education: building on experience: an
ESRC/SRHE research seminar series
Seminar 5. 24 June 2003, University of Wales Institute Cardiff
Changing systems, changing roles: expectations and experiences of staff.
This, the fifth in the series, is the first of three drawing on the staff
experience in higher education. Thanks to UWIC for the invitation, to Peter
Treadwell and Martin Barclay for hosting and to Clare Brockway and Cathy
Williams in the conference office for local support. My apologies that this
notification has been somewhat delayed. Please pass on details to any
colleagues or network contacts.You may wish to note that the next seminar
will be at City University on 21 October.
Details of how to get to the Llandaff campus of UWIC are given below. The
timing of the start to the day has been adjusted to allow for those
travelling on the London- Swansea service to use the 9-00 from Paddington.
If there is a demand, we will arrange a minibus from the railway station
and a return at the end of the day.
Coffee will be available from 10-45; the morning session will start
formally at 11-30. The seminar will end by 4-30 at the latest.

Ian McNay, University of Greenwich: Role shifts, role strains and re-balancing
Wendy Saunderson, University of Ulster: Lipstick on the Gorilla: Gender,
identity and EO issues in UK higher education
Lunch will be from 1-15 to 2-00. After reports from discussion groups,
afternoon presentations will be:
Tom Wilson, NATFHE: Changing times, changing demands: what academics want
from work
Stephen Rowland, University College London: Overcoming fragmentation in
academic life
The fee, as usual, will be £25, but charged only to those who register, but
do not arrive it is a nuisance value fee. There is no fee for attendance.
Registration must be made by 10-00 am on Friday 19 June, at the latest.
Support is available to cover attendance costs of a small number of
research students.
