Thanks, Doug, for your poem. I like the way it interweaves
this more abstract language "the absent i partakes of sky"
with the conversational "the just folks he paddled away from"
and the way they come together in "the sky he you i drowned in".
Which, continuing a thought I started in my post to Liz, makes
me think that perhaps since we don't use rhetoric much, and
perhaps therefore don't think rhetorically often, the development
of the layers of meaning occurs in some other language of
discourse. Though like you, I don't think that rhetoric
is necessarily extinct; I didn't take the advice of my
teacher to never use a rhetorical question, since all such
general prohibitions get on my nerves!
