Though I see the date being pushed back in subsequent mails, the
initial suggestion that the end of internal wars in the U.S. (against
the indigenous population) was swiftly followed by an imperial reach
externally got me wondering whether the final conquest of internal
'enemies' in Spain (Moors & Jews), gave way immediately to conquest
abroad, is a close enough analogue to be significant?
Yes, in 1492, not only did Columbus sail the ocean blue
for Ferdinand and Isabella, but the Reconquest of
Spain occurred with the fall of Granada, and the Edict
of the Expulsion of the Jews (along with Moors, New
Christians, conversos under suspicion) and the Academy
of the Spanish language was instituted, under the theory
that language should be like limpieza sangre, the pure
blood of Spain. So close an analogue, it might be a single
gesture.
Best,
Rebecca
