I'd like to hear that parody. Ken, I always liked Sherman's line about
having Lenny Bruce at the camp too. I love those old comics but I have to
admit some of their jokes can be a little grating; particularly their jokes
about Jewish women. Sherman was always very funny without presentung
negative stereotypes. Back in the early 80s I had some friends who were big
Beatles fans and they begged me to play the Sherman track for them about
hating the Beatles. Around the same time I saw "AIrplane" in Isreal,
subtitled in Hebrew. It was interesting that the audience loved the shot of
the AIr El plane wearing a tallis but didn't laugh at all at the pamphlet
"great Jewish Sports Legends". The poke at the supposed lack of athletic
talent probably annoyed them, particuarly if they were thinking of their
own sports teams.
Incidently, at this time, when I was in my final year of high shcool, our
social studies teacher brought in "Lyndon Johnson goes to the Caskills" for
class and played us most of the tracks. WHy, I don't know, unless he had a
grunge against MacManara and wanted us to hear the rountine where he is
trying to group the Green Berets and the hat manufacturer on the phone with
him wants him to order blue berets. I was the only one in the room who
laughed at the record. It did have one hilarious moment where "Johnson" was
ordering kasa vanishes with his Texan accent.
Yours,
Ivy
