Mark
I have been reading the comments regarding HPC with interest. At this
point, other than say I agree with the concept of a GPC and 'independence' I
will reserve my comments. However, the comment from your orthopaedic friend
is wide of the mark, in that podiatric surgery has been in existence in the
UK for a lot longer than 15 years, albeit, not in such a structured way and
not in the NHS. I would really Like to believe what she says about the
safety of the public, but my cynicism leads me to think that orthpaedic
surgeons'concern is more likely to be centred on income, protectionism and
waiting lists!
Regards
Jeff

John,
Wanting a dedicated register is one thing; setting one up is another. You
may be altruistic and apolitical in your intent, but once the register is
up and running (alongside the HPC), I'm afraid that it will be most
certainly seen as a political statement. All I'm doing is playing the
Devil's Advocate - we have to try and foresee and plan - as best we can -
for the ramifications of setting off down this road.
For instance, I received an email from one of our colleagues in
Orthopoaedics last night - she's a lurker on the mailbase from time to
time - and she opinioned that she knows how we feel about the issues
regarding the HPC. In her words 'that's precisely how we felt when the
podiatric surgeons started operating fifteen years ago...the issue of
public safety was paramount in our opposition'.
As a single issue campaign, we may get support from the wider profession,
if they can be motivated. But I would suggest that it will take more than
just this issue to get them moving. Yes, you are correct, I have opinions
on structure and funding of models, but please don't think I'm trying to
hijack your suggestion - I think it's laudable and should be supported -
but I believe you need to try and fit it into a more comprehensive
strategy - if you don't; the politicians will - then they'll dictate the
pace.
I agree with Eric; we need to set out all the issues before we embark on
this journey. Fighting it on a single issue and we'll be ill-prepared.
Sincerely
