Dear all,
apologies for the rather late posting of this. Reading "Winnie-the-Pooh",
A.A. Milne, Methuen Books (in the interests of linguistic research,
obviously), it is stated that Winnie the Pooh is called Winnie, despite the
fact that he is male, because he is in fact "Winnie-ther [sic]-Pooh". This
clearly seems to indicate a stressed schwa in British English dating from
1926.
